Birds are one of the most interesting animal group. In the world today, there are about 9500 described species. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, during 120 years of study of avifauna, according to Clements and associates’ classification (2009) 336 species have been recorded.
Nowadays birds are an important environmental indicator, and the obligation of every developed country is to respect international conventions for birds and their habitat protection. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the last hundred years, 20 species of birds stopped nesting. On the other hand, in BiH, the daily violation of international conventions puts many species and their habitats in danger of extinction.
Birdwatching, except for scientific purposes, is a widespread hobby that in some countries reaches the level of sports competition. Estimates are that more than two billion people are actively or passively involved in birdwatching. In Bosnia and Herzegovina does not yet exist a large number of birdwatchers. Our goal is to inform the citizens about birdwatching and to involve them in this activity to raise awareness about birds and their habitat protection.
Bird song, colors and their playfulness have always attracted the attention of observers. Every day we witness the disappearance of numerous bird species as well as their habitats. Therefore it is necessary to act together to prevent it. Join us and become a bird friend. Help us to preserve the melody of our future mornings.
Romanian team of five experts (Attila Nagy, Luca Andrei Dehelean, Attila Fülöp, Zsolt Hegyeli, Andreea-Steriana Sandu) for the NGO Milvus, on March 22nd 2012. visited BiH in search of Maia, the Saker Falcon. In the Wilson Walk, in Sarajevo on April 25th and 26th 2012. Field workshops were held with the students from elementary schools Grbavica I and II. The participants observed birds in the surrounding area and on Miljacka River. Telescopes and binoculars were used as well as promotional and educational material was distributed.
